The Ica Stones of Peru

One of the great enigmas of planet Earth revolves around a collection of approximately 15,000 pre-Columbian artifacts, the ancient carved glyph rock library known as the Ica Stones.

They are carved stones supposedly found in a cave in the coastal desert city of Ica, Peru. Ica is a relatively small area, some 300 kilometers from Lima. In the 1960's a farmer claimed to have found piles and piles of rocks deep in various gorges and caves not far from the Nazca Lines. Some were also buried slightly under the ground. The native farmer produced only bags of stones at first, but later, he produced literally thousands of the artifacts. For some time he made a good living selling the stones to tourists. The farmer became something of a celebrity. Word traveled in the archeological world, and experts descended on Ica.

As the story goes ... The Peruvian government took an interest in the stones. They did not Peru to become another Egypt, overrun with diggers and robbers. They had enough of them already. No one knows what was said to the farmer but after arrest and confinement, he suddenly admitted in writing that the stones were hoaxed and that he had carved the stones himself. He was going to bilk the tourists and never realized it would get out of hand.

In 1966, Dr. Javier Cabrera, the town's physician, received a small, carved rock for his birthday from a native. The carving on the rock looked ancient to Dr. Cabrera, but intrigued him because it seemed to depict a primitive fish.

Dr. Cabrera became the prime customer for the stones, and the farmer apparently had an endless supply. Dr. Cabrera questioned the farmer about carving the stones. The farmer was evasive and maintained his story about created them himself for fear of being arrested again and put in jail for the rest of his life.

When Dr. Cabrera had bought a few thousand he wanted to know how many there were in total. The farmer seemed to produce more every week. Cabrera was beginning to believe that he had fallen prey to this farmer, and the man had created them himself. The farmer refused to discuss how he made the stones. Logically Dr. Cabrera figured that the farmer would have had to carve one stone every day for over 40 years to produce the total library! This could not be possible. Dr. Cabrera set out to find answers about his Ica Stones based on the designs on the stones.

The stones come in all sizes. There are small ones that can fit in the palm of you hand. There are rocks as large as a dog. All of the stones have images that have been carved with continuous lines etched into the rock surface. The etching reveals a lighter color than the original dark varnish of age, yet the etched grooves also bear traces of this varnish, indicating that the carving was done in ancient times. They are a form of Andesite, a gray to black volcanic rock, and a very hard mineral that would make etching quite difficult with primitive tools, a local river rock, covered with a patina of natural oxidation. Laboratories in Germany have authenticated the incisions that make up the carvings as extremely ancient. Nearby fossil finds indicate the area to be replete in bone fragments millions of years old.

Unlike clay figurines that have organic material (i.e. straw) in their composition, there are no organic materials in plain old rock that will tell anything of its age. Traditional radiocarbon dating techniques rely upon organic material (that was once alive) to determine age. The surface of these rocks, however, has a varnish that is the result of bacteria and minute organisms which have adhered to them. A good black varnish or patina will take thousands of years to discolor and coat each stone. Etching these rocks would have removed the existing varnish, revealing the bare rock. Since these rocks have developed additional varnish in the grooves, it seems likely that they have were carved a long time ago.

Dr. Cabrera's library is organized by subject matter including physical and social sciences (races of man), (nature) ancient animals, geography (lost continents), and prophecy (the knowledge of global catastrophe.)

Dr. Cabrera concluded that there was no way the farmer had time, skills, nor knowledge of how to create the stones. After purchasing 11,000 stones, Dr. Cabrera became a trusted friend of the farmer. He learned that the man was released from prison once he signed the confession that he was cheating the tourists. He agreed not to pretend the stones came from the hills but that he had indeed carved them himself. It was either that or go to prison for the remainder of his life for selling government possessions (the international antiquity laws).

Dr. Cabrera continued his research with geologists to interpret the maps on several stones showing a weird configuration of the world. Some angles and land masses looked vaguely familiar, but the majority were badly skewered into strange shapes. Geologists have confirmed that based on current computer projections, the shapes indicated on the rocks are indeed accurate for the planet Earth, as it was, about 13,000,000 (million) years ago - pre-stone age.

Peru has always held a spiritual fascination for people seeking higher knowledge. It has an air of mystery about it often linked to visits by Ancient Astronauts. Much of Peru sits on a major grid point meaning the electromagnetic energies are very strong. Peru is also a coastal region - the pull of the sea always a connection for those who study metaphysics as water represents the collective flow of creation. UFO sightings are common among local natives in Peru who say that watching a ship land in the water or on the land is not unusual. Some people claim to communicate with aliens. Machu Picchu is considered by some to have been a landing strip for UFO's.

The Ica Stones will remain an unsolved mystery along with the Nazca Lines on the Plains of Peru which some believe could only have been designed as a blueprint by creational forces. This area has been thought by some to be an ancient spaceport based on the harness of electromagnetic energy for propulsion of space faring vehicles. The entire area was made up of huge iron ore deposits that concentrated magnetic energy, creating an electromagnetic field of extraordinary strength.

Who actually created the Ica Stones? Evidence seems to show they were not created by humans of the time line of their creation, but for now they remain an enigma.

This is not about nature today

I have been working toward a routine of early morning jogging. A couple of weeks ago it was cool in the a.m., so out I went and jogged for 22 minutes straight. The next day I could only run for about 5 minutes because my hands were freezing (that’s my story and I’m sticking to it). Today I ran for 30 minutes. It is surprising to me that at my age and long hiatus at jogging, I can just go out and run that long without having to stop and rest a few times along the way. I am pleased.

I used to run almost every day for months at a stretch and then alternate with not running for an equivalent amount of time. Well ok, maybe the quit nickels were a little more than the run pennys. Each time I quit, I would have to retrain my body when I resumed. You know the drill: run for 5 minutes, walk for 5, run 5, walk 5… I used to have to do that several days in a row before I could run without walk-resting.

Then I learned I have a ticker problem; it is more like a zig-zag than a tick-tock. The ticker in my brain works fine, but the following cascade of 3 more tickers in my heart would tock out of order when I jogged or did other exertions. This causes the circulatory system to slow down and work less efficiently, effectively quashing endurance. My doctor put me on a derivative of digitalis, the deadly poison derived from the Old World foxglove plant, which straightened out the ticking. Mountain biking, hiking and caving are so much more enjoyable now, but I still hadn’t returned to jogging because of the boredom of it all and the uncertainty of how my (now) older heart would react.

Then a couple of days ago I learned that a long time friend had a heart attack. He awoke in the middle of the night with a pain under his arm and went quickly to a hospital where they installed a stent in one of three arteries that were clogged. He said his blood tests had always come back fine with cholesterol levels low. The doc said he might have died if he had gotten to the hospital much later. He has since learned there are better tests for circulatory problems than the standard tests that family doctors prescribe. Methinks I should review them, too.

Anyway, that was the motivation for running this morning. I remember how much I used to enjoy running, and now am reminded that it might be a good way to keep the arteries open. I find it ironic that a poisonous plant can give me so much life. To the survivors!

Spanish Resorts - Benidorm and The Costa Blanca

Benidorm - By far the biggest tourist resort on the Costa Blanca and probably the whole of Europe, the town of Benidorm is visited by over 4 million holidaymakers each year, and it is not hard to see why it is such a big draw. Benidorm basically, has it all, beautiful wide, sandy beaches, which stretch for miles, a huge variety of bars, restaurants and live entertainment, superb luxury hotels with excellent facilities, a vibrant and exciting nightlife and numerous fabulous tourist attractions including theme parks, funfairs, safari parks, animal shows and a wonderful water park. For a family holiday with plenty to do Benidorm cannot be matched on the Costa Blanca, or in fact anywhere else in Spain.

Denia - Situated in the northernmost area of the Costa Blanca region is the beautiful coastal resort of Denia, it's medieval castle dates back to the 11th Century and was begun by the Moors during the Arab conquest. Even further back in time, Denia was a Greek colony and was also settled by the Iberians and the Romans. During the 19th Century, Denia became an important area for the growing of raisins and a group of English raisin traders lived there until the Spanish Civil War in the 1930's The 20th Century brought the new industry of tourism and Denia has become a popular location for tourists seeking a seaside holiday.

Elche - Famous for its huge palm forest (Palmerar D'Elx), its 4th Century BC bust 'The Lady of Elche' (Dama D'Elx) and its haunting medieval drama 'The Mystery of Elche' (Misteri D'Elx), the Costa Blanca city of Elche is the 3rd largest in the Communidad de Valencia. Its 220,000 (in 2006) inhabitants live in a city surrounded by over 200,000 palm trees - the largest palm forest in Europe. A mostly agricultural area up until the 19th Century, Elche developed an thriving shoe-making industry which is now one of the most important in Spain.

Playa Flamenca – Located in the Orihuela Costa district of the southern Costa Blanca, Playa Flamenca could not be called a traditional Spanish village, in fact up until the early 1970’s it was just an area of barren coastline. Developed by a group of Flemish investors, Playa Flamenca has become one of the most popular destinations along the coast, the newly improved beach and promenade have given the resort a much needed facelift. The busy Saturday market is one of the big attractions of Playa Flamenca and thousands of shoppers head there every week looking for a bargain or two.

Vega Baja – The most southerly district of the Alicante province, the Vega Baja has a name which means ‘Low Fertile Valley’, an important area for the growing of fresh produce, citrus fruits in particular, it also has a beautiful coastline with some fine beaches and popular resorts. The capital of the district is the town of Orihuela and the largest of its coastal towns are Torrevieja and Guardamar del Segura, where superb white, sandy beaches are lapped by the sparkling, tranquil waters of the azure blue Mediterranean Sea.

Villajoyosa - Located on the northern Costa Blanca coastline between Alicante and Benidorm, the town of Villajoyosa is famous for its brightly coloured houses. The reason for the vibrant blues, yellows and reds of the seafront houses was a practical one, as they were painted so that the town's fishermen could spot their homes from far out at sea and sail safely home to their loved ones. Villajoyosa is often referred to as 'Chocolate Heaven' due to its production of Spanish chocolate delicacies since 1881 when one Don Valenciano Lopez Lloret started his business there.

Cabo Roig – The resort of Cabo Roig is one of the coastal towns of the Vega Baja district of the Alicante province, situated in an area of the coastline known as the Orihuela Costa. Cabo Roig originally grew up around a sixteenth century watchtower which was constructed to warn the neighbourhood of impending attacks from Berber pirates which occurred frequently along this part of the coast between the 14th and 17th centuries. Cabo Roig is now a popular holiday resort with 2 superb beaches and an exclusive marina and yachting club. One of the highlights of Cabo Roig is the stunning cliff walk from Cala Caleta to La Zenia, providing some breathtaking views along the way.

Calpe – Situated on the northern Costa Blanca between the towns of Javea and Altea is the lovely coastal resort of Calpe. Best known for the spectacular rock formation, the Peñon de Ifach, Calpe is popular with both holidaymakers and day-trippers. Calpe’s excellent sandy beaches are busy during the summer months and provide a good selection of water sports facilities. With a history going back to Roman times, Calpe has some interesting places to visit, including the remains of a Roman fish salting factory which stands beside the seafront promenade. The stunning rock, the Peñon de Ifach, watches over Calpe like a protective mother, and it is now a conserved area with a wide variety of flora and fauna.

Indonesia long awaits the saviors, Satria Piningit and Ratu Adil to show-up on the political stage to usher-in the Golden Age; and she secretly expects the saviors to "glorify" her before the other nations, just as other groups or some other nations egotistically long for the same thing. We would like to emphasize here that emissaries from God do not appear for the progress of a single group, sect, nation, etc.; the "angels" of God march on behalf of the spiritual unfoldment of humanity and the manifestation of God's Will on Earth.

In this chapter we will discuss this subject of Ratu Adil and Satria Piningit in greater detail that has only been touched upon previously.

Ratu Adil

Ratu Adil, is the "Queen of Justice " as translated into English. An improved rendering would be "Goddess of Justice." The goddess is also called Satrio Wirang by some mystics. Many centuries ago her advent and influence was prophesied by Jayabaya, or those appropriating his name, such as Pangeran Wijil who wrote the book, "Jangka Jayabaya" in 1741.

Ever since the prediction was made there have been speculations as to the probable nature or even identity of the goddess, and also her associate, Satria Piningit. There are those that believe that when the time is ripe Ratu Adil would incarnate and live in the physical world as a human being and establish justice in a chaotic and anarchic world.

R. Ng Ranggawarsita, a poet of the "Kraton Surakarta" once wrote that a king would be born in Mecca with symbolic signs appearing such as the "Tujung Putih, Pudak Sinumpet," or "White Lotus Flower, Hidden Bud." The White Lotus Flower supposedly refers to Ratu Adil, whereas the Hidden Bud refers to Satria Piningit.

White lotus flowers have always signified spirituality or divinity to the ancient Egyptians, Hindus, and other cultures. The symbolic signs above could well mean that though she is unveiled, she is yet hidden; or in other words, her influence would be active in the physical world of men but she herself will remain unseen, the reason being that she resides in a different dimension. When mystics mention Mecca, what they are actually referring to is the Kabah, or House of God. In esoteric language, the Kabah symbolizes a high state of consciousness, or a lofty spiritual estate. Considering then, Mecca in conjunction with the other symbols we may reason Ratu Adil to be a divine, spiritual being, a goddess, functioning in a higher world unseen by the physical senses, but active in directing her representatives to work on behalf of Truth, Freedom and Justice.

Some believe that the coming of Ratu Adil simply means that at a future date justice would rule over our hearts and souls, and that our governments would implement Justice and Truth as the voice of their respective nation's conscience. We concur with this belief; however, it might surprise some people to know that the Goddess of Justice, or Ratu Adil, does actually exist as a personal being and known to some students of esotericism. She is a cosmic entity far more advanced than any "perfect" human being, hence the title of "Goddess." She is known among the members of the Spiritual Hierarchy and their unascended disciples as "Portia (Por-shia), the Goddess of Justice."

According to notions here in Indonesia, Ratu Adil is somehow associated with Satria Piningit. Western occultism supports this concept. Ratu Adil and Satria Piningit are actually what is called "Twin-Flames," or "Twin-Spirits." To explain briefly what Twin-Souls are according to western occultism: the true identity of man is the Spirit, the divine spark of God within the microcosm. Theosophical students call this the "Monad". When the main Divine Spark first emerged from the parent-flame, or God, it consisted of two polarities, one masculine and the other feminine. These two polarities later separated into lesser Sparks, or Spirits. Each human being is that evolving Spirit of a certain polarity of one of those billions of Divine Sparks, and each of us has a Twin-Spirit somewhere in the universe. Though most of us are presently separated from our Twin, we will unite with our "alter ego" when we have evolved to a certain stage and fulfilled certain spiritual tasks. Related to the principle of Twin-Flames are the Soul-mate and Karmic-mate concepts; however, they are irrelevant in this paper.

Portia, or Ratu Adil is one of the directors of the Karmic Board, and as such she is known as a "Lord of Karma." The Karmic Board plays an important role in the evolution of humanity. The Board may be considered as the "higher law," or God's channel for executing divine justice, in contradistinction to the justice of mortal man who gleefully say that "justice is blind."

We quote below from a glossary of the Summit Lighthouse the purpose of the Board of Karma and its members:

"The Lords of Karma dispense justice to this system of worlds, adjudicating karma, mercy, and judgment on behalf of every lifestream. All souls must pass before the Karmic Board before and after each incarnation on earth, receiving their assignment and karmic allotment for each lifetime beforehand and the review of their performance at its conclusion. Through the 'Keeper of the Scrolls' and the 'Recording Angels,' the Lords of Karma have access to the complete records of every lifestream's incarnations on earth. They determine who shall embody, as well as when and where. They assign souls to families and communities, measuring out the weights of karma that must be balanced as the 'jot and tittle' of the law. The Karmic Board, acting in consonance with the individual I AM Presence and Christ Self, determines when the soul has earned the right to be free from the wheel of karma and the round of rebirth . . ."

There are presently eight members in the Karmic Board, each one representing a Spiritual Ray or power emanating from the spiritual counterpart of the Sun. All of them are lofty cosmic beings. To explain what these Spiritual Rays are is beyond the scope of this work. The Lords of Karma are:

And recently a new member was installed representing the five secret rays--Vairochana--one of the Dhyani Buddhas.

Satria Piningit

As we said before, Christ, Ratu Adil, and Satria Piningit are members of the Spiritual Hierarchy and/or the Karmic Board. Satria Piningit is one of the "Lords of the Flame." These Lords are called Chohans, meaning "Lord," or "Master" in Tibetan. There are seven Lords functioning under the direction of the three departments of the spiritual government. Each of the Chohan represents and directs the Christ-Consciousness of a certain Divine Ray emanating from the Spiritual Sun; they also represent the qualities associated with that Ray. They assist the evolution of humanity in that field, or Ray-aspect with which they represent. The Lord of the Seventh Ray is a spiritual entity called Saint Germain; the name is a title, it means, "Holy Brother." Saint Germain is Satria Piningit, the Knight Commander whose advent was predicted by Jayabaya. Saint Germain and Portia (Satria Piningit and Ratu Adil) are Devapi and Maru as mentioned in the Kalki Purana. "Devapi" literally means "God of Fire," or in other words, "Lord of the Flame." Aside from being a Chohan of the Seventh Ray, Saint Germain also holds the title of "God of Freedom." This is the reason why whenever freedom is called for, the Knight Commander responds. In the past, St.Germain played an important role in the American Revolution.

It is our belief that he was active in the fight for freedom in Indonesia several decades ago as well, and also why his presence may be felt even now by our local "sensitives." Economy, Organization, and Ceremony come under the direction of the office of the Lord of the Seventh Ray. Satria Piningit is also the great economist; and under his direction monetary and economic crisis may be solved but under certain strict conditions. St.Germain is likewise the "Initiator of Souls" in the science and ritual of transmutation through the violet flame of the Holy Spirit. Below we give the name of the Lords of the Rays, together with the colour Ray that they rule and their associated field of expertise:

According to Jayabaya, Satria Piningit will "appear" in an Age to come. Since Jayabaya made this prediction in the Age of Pisces, the "Age to come" refers to the Aquarian Age. It is not known exactly when the Aquarian Age would commence. Some give the date 2002 AD. to be the start of the New Age. The consensus among Indonesian psychics, several years ago, is that Satria Piningit would appear at the end of 1998. If they were referring to a physical presence and a public appearance then they may be mistaken, as so far, to this very day, there is no indication whatsoever to that effect--at least not in Indonesia.

Why was the advent of St.Germain said to be in the coming Age? According to certain sources, aside from being the Lord of the Seventh Ray, St. Germain, alias, Satria Piningit is also the Hierarch or the President-Director for the Aquarian Age. He rules the New Age as Hierarch together with his twin-flame Portia, the Goddess of Justice.

Another reason why the influence of Saint Germain is now growing in world affairs is that because now there is a great influx of the Violet Ray beaming upon our planet. Each of the Seven Rays has its cycle of influence in world affairs. Each cycle may run for centuries. The Violet Ray is now the predominant ray influencing humanity, with Satria Piningit as its Lord. It would be interesting to note that the symbol of St.Germain is the violet Maltese cross.

Knowing that the Knight Commander is the Lord of the Violet Ray it came to no surprise to us when we read in a local paranormal magazine ("Misteri" issue no.220) dealing with the supernatural, concerning Satria Piningit and the Violet Ray, as mentioned by "Eyang Prawiro." According to Prawiro, the signs of the emergence of Satria Piningit are indicated by hailstorms--and from the South; after the abeyance of the storm, a certain refined violet light like a rainbow will shine upon a hill. And it is there that the one who is in spiritual retreat will be consecrated with the violet light that is called the "spirit of Satria Piningit."

We would like to state here that there is an esoteric interpretation to the above description. Hills or mountains often symbolize the peak of consciousness while in intense meditation. They do not refer to a physical place. The one meditating may be any individual seeking for enlightenment. Hailstorms symbolizes psychological turmoil. In a spiritual-state during meditation, one may indeed contact the Knight Commander and be empowered by his Violet Ray and come under his spiritual influence should certain basic requirements be fulfilled. The above description, therefore, does not refer to any particular individual at all, but all those who align themselves with the ideals and principles embodied by St.Germain.

From the same source as the above, Eyang Prawiro says that Satria Piningit is not a human spirit. This substantiates our concept that the Knight Commander is a very evolved being, a god--using the term to mean a highly evolved entity that has transcended the human state of being. Below we quote Prawiro:

"Untuk Satrio Piningit, tokoh adil, kharismatik dan superpintar itu, dalam kontemplasi saya adalah roh yang supersuci dan bukan dari manusia, tapi dari roh halus, roh Malaikat pembantu Allah yang dipilih untuk menitis dalam bentuk wujud nyata manusia di dunia dan melakukan tindakan keadilan melawan kejahatan yang merajalela di Bumi."

("Regarding the Hidden Knight, a righteous, charismatic, and super-intelligent individual--in my contemplation is a very evolved spirit and not a human being, but a higher dimensional entity, a Guardian Angel of God that has been chosen to incarnate in this world in a human physical form and perform acts of justice against evil that is violently overpowering this world.")

The "Guardian Angel of God" that Prawiro refers to is in accord with the teachings of western occultism that the Knight Commander is a Lord of the Flame, one of those high entities appointed to rule over a Spiritual Ray; however, it is not known whether Saint Germain actually is embodied, physically speaking. Many occult students believe that he is.

Prawiro also goes on to say that there are many Satria Piningits, and they will all appear to bring peace to the planet wherever and whenever they are needed. It should be evident from what we have revealed thus far, that Saint Germain has his representatives all over the planet, all of them being directed and inspired to work and act on behalf of Freedom, Justice, and Truth. Saint Germain contacts his knights telepathically and spiritually.

Prawiro also believes that one particular representative of Saint Germain will be chosen to be the leader of this nation, and that this said representative is still unknown. This could well be a possibility, but we would like to emphasize that there will be many who will represent the Knight Commander, and not just a single individual. They may not all be politicians.

Regarding the representative of St. Germain, or Indonesia's future leader, Prawiro says that this individual chosen will be a Muslim, a follower of Islam, and not a devotee of one of the other religions. This may or may not be true, depending upon our perspective. The word Islam means, "surrender,"--surrender to God and to Cosmic law. It is also the surrender of the false ego, that the greater will of God may be implemented. In this sense all those who surrender themselves, no matter what religion they follow, may be considered as devotees of Islam, disregarding the "Syariat" aspect of the religion.

Prawiro goes on to say that the leader will be a man and not a woman. Does this refer to the physical body or to psychological traits? If it refers to psychological traits even entities in female bodies may be considered "male." In reality, the soul is neither male nor female.

There is also a current belief that Satria Piningit or his representative is a Javanese. We would like to stress here that Saint Germain is not a Javanese, though his representatives are of many races; however, this is irrelevant. It is not the outer form that is important, but the inner quality of the soul. Nevertheless, we may interpret the word "Java-nese" to mean a "man of God." In the Hebrew language, the Tetragramaton--the four-letter word, represents the name of God. The four letters are "Yod-He-Vau-He." The real pronunciation of the word is known only to a few. The Tetragramaton is said to possess miraculous powers when enunciated correctly. Scholars and mystics of the past variably pronounce the Divine Name as, Jevo, Jao, Javo, Jave, Javeh, Jehovah, Jehva, Jahu, Yahweh, Java, etc. From this our readers may well understand how we infer "Javanese" to mean "Man of God." Some may object that the Hebrew and Javanese languages have nothing in common; it should be known, however, that many languages do share a common root.

Many sources claim that St.Germain had many vital incarnations. He was, for instance, embodied as Samuel the Prophet (circa 1100 B.C.); as Joseph, the husband and protector of Mary and their child Jesus; as Proclus, Greek philosopher of the 5th century; as Merlin the Magician; as St.Alban who lived in the 8th century; as Roger Bacon (circa 1214-1294)--English philosopher and experimental scientist; as Christopher Columbus; as Francis Bacon (Shakespeare), Lord Chancellor of England--statesman, essayist, the "father of inductive science"; and as Prince Rakoczy--the Comte de Saint Germain, the "Wonderman of Europe"--he who was referred to by Voltaire in a letter to Frederick II as the "man who never dies." As a "physical immortal" in that incarnation his worldly activities have been documented for more than a century (1710-1822). He was said to be still alive in the 20th century with many eye-witnesses, one being Charles Leadbeater, an eminent theosophical member.

Saint Germain as Francis Bacon engineered his own mock death and subsequently moved to Rakoczy Mansion in the Carpathian foothills of Translavania where he "ascended." The Ascension is one of the advanced initiations offered to man; its spiritual level is much higher than Sainthood, or Masterhood.

San Felasco and Gum Slough

The San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park was the choice for Friday’s bike and hike. Bruce was recouperating from a bout with the flu, so we got a late start and only wandered about 9.5 miles that day. Using the GPS, existing bike and horse trails, and a variety of maps (topo, Google Earth, park trail maps), we were able to fill in some more of the puzzle (to me) that is the karst valley that ends in Sanchez Prairie. San Felasco is a special place that I never tire of exploring. It may be the closest thing around here to a large area of mature, natural vegetation spread across the transition zone between the impervious Northern Highlands and the karstic Newberry Plain. San Felasco also has small pockets of true “Old Growth Forest” if you know where to look. I know some of them, and continue to look for others.

San Felasco is pretty big for day trip explorations on foot, horseback or bicycle (no overnighters allowed - but maybe along the Florida Trail here?). The karst valley we are trying to tie down is smack in the middle between the north and south entrances to the park, there are no roads to it, the only trails to it are horse trails that bicyclists aren’t supposed to use, and the topography has a lot of ups and downs. In a nutshell, it is an aerobic little adventure to get there and another to come back, but they’re good ones. IMO, the trails are as challenging as the trails of the nationally renowned Santos Bike Trails Area, but are more scenic at San Felasco and are paths less traveled. The trails at Santos are on severely impacted property supporting raggedy early successional pine and hardwood forests plus old abandoned barge canal segments plus spoil piles and borrow pits and the like. It’s a great place to ride on red trails, though, and certainly more appropriate than San Felasco for ambitious, healthy mountain bikers who are not naturalists. Some of the trails at San Felasco are within early successional forests, too, but most of San Felasco’s trails run through mature hardwood forests or even older growth climax hardwood forests. Plus, the slope forests along the northern edge of Sanchez Prairie have that oak-beech look without the beech, but we can imagine…

On Saturday, Bruce, Brack and I did a bike and short hike trip at the Half Moon Wildlife Management Area in Sumter County, FL. The property encompasses 9,480 acres in the southeast corner of the confluence of the southern Withlacoochee River and Gum Slough. We got a late start on this 12.4-mile ride due to first attending an environmental expo in The Villages. We biked the main limerock road from the parking area at the northern end of CR 247 northward about 4 miles to Davies Road, intending to ultimately stand at the edge of Gum Slough Creek. There is a dirt road through the woods between and roughly paralleling the main road and the river-slough floodplain that would take us back to the parking area. We had intended to return via that route, but at that late hour it would have resulting in a death march along an unkempt road through hordes of ‘skeeters after dark. Nope. Didn’t.

Along Davies Road, we found a relatively easy route down into the Gum Slough floodplain where we stashed our bikes and hoofed it downhill. We almost made it to an eastern braid of the stream, but elected to keep our feet dry. This floodplain is not very level, but rather is crisscrossed with flood channels, natural streamside levees and natural rounded and elongated hillocks. Wet areas closer to the stream braids are dominated by mostly deciduous hardwoods like red maple and swamp tupelo, but we saw at least one pretty large sweetbay (Magnolia virginiana) almost 3 ft in diameter. The higher elevations supported a mature mid-successional mesic hardwood forest while intermediate elevations were dominated by a semi-evergreen hardwood forest dominated by live oak (Quercus virginiana). The latter habitat is also called “low hammock,” and is my favorite woods that we visited that day.

This low hammock is dominated by “too much” live oak, if there is such a thing. I say the former because it might compose over 50% of the overstory canopy, and I say the latter because live oak is a special tree. Driving down the highway you can see scads of live oaks out in Florida’s horse pastures. Their enormous 6-, 8- and 10-ft diameter trunks rise about a dozen feet off the ground and then multiple brontosaurian-necked limbs soar up and out and swoop down and spread out to form a hemisphere of photosynthesis a hundred feet in diameter and half that in height. Their limbs and trunks will be partially coated with resurrection fern and Spanish moss will cascade from their branches. If abandoned, that pasture will grow up into a forest dominated by those hemisphaerical, “open-grown” elders. You walk through that forest and think you are in an ancient copse because of the mightiness of their trunks, but in many cases they are less than a hundred years old, so don’t be fooled! The next step in the successional trend of the forest is exemplified by the low hammock habitat along Gum Slough, which you can see behind the below-pictured live oak:


Look at the form of that tree. Obviously, it is not a hemisphaerical, open-grown tree. That trunk rises almost straight up for about 45 feet before it first branches, and the trunk at that height is about 3 ft in diameter. This is a forest-grown tree, one that got its start in a small clearing that was created by a tree dying there long ago, allowing sunlight to reach the mature second-growth forest floor to energize the live oak of today. Notice the trunk is covered near the ground by bryophytes (true mosses). If you could see the limbwork high over Bruce’s and Brack’s heads, you could observe that resurrection fern and Spanish moss have been joined by several more epiphytes like ball moss, Bartram’s moss and several other Tillandsias, plus two orchids, the green-fly orchid (Epidendrum conopseum) and Tampa butterfly orchid (Encyclia tampensis). In truly old-growth live oak forests, there are more species of trees in the overstory and live oaks have a much higher density of epiphytes, at least in low hammocks.

The next time I visit Half Moon, and I certainly intend to, I will take the woods road and go looking for karst outcrops along the river and slough floodplain and its edge. Let me know if you want to go.

The Secrets of Coral Castle

Did a Latvian immigrant rediscover the secrets to the building of the pyramids... of levitation... of anti-gravity? His amazing "castle" may hold clues to long-lost powers.

Coral Castle in Homestead, Florida, is one of the most amazing structures ever built. In terms of accomplishment, it's been compared to Stonehenge, ancient Greek temples, and even the great pyramids of Egypt. It is amazing - some even say miraculous - because it was quarried, fashioned, transported, and constructed by one man: Edward Leedskalnin, a 5-ft. tall, 100-lb. Latvian immigrant.

Many men have single-handedly built their own homes, but Leedskalnin's choice of building materials is what makes his undertaking so incredible. He used huge blocks of coral rock, some weighing as much as 30 tons, and somehow was able to move them and set them in place without assistance or the use of modern machinery. And therein lies the mystery. How did he do it?

It's estimated that 1,000 tons of coral rock were used in construction of the walls and towers, and an additional 100 tons of it were carved into furniture and art objects:

• An obelisk he raised weighs 28 tons.
• The wall surrounding Coral Castle stands 8 ft. tall and consists of large blocks each weighing several tons.
• Large stone crescents are perched atop 20-ft.-high walls.
• A 9-ton swinging gate that moves at the touch of a finger guards the eastern wall.
• The largest rock on the property weighs an estimated 35 tons.
• Some stones are twice the weight of the largest blocks in the Great Pyramid at Giza.

Working alone, Leedskalnin labored for 20 years - from 1920 to 1940 - to build the home he originally called "Rock Gate Park" in Florida City. The story goes that he built it after being jilted by his fiancée, who changed her mind about marrying him because he was too old and too poor. After wandering around the U.S. and Canada for several years, Leedskalnin settled in Florida City for health reasons; he had been diagnosed with tuberculosis. He began building his coral home in 1920. Then in 1936, when a planned new subdivision of homes threatened his privacy, Leedskalnin moved his entire home 10 miles to Homestead, where he completed it, and where it still stands as a tourist attraction.

How Leedskalnin managed this feat of engineering has remained a mystery all these years because, incredibly, no one saw him do it. A secretive man, Leedskalnin often worked at night by lantern light. And so there are no credible witnesses to how the small, frail man was able to move the huge blocks of rock. Even when he moved the entire structure to Homestead, neighbors saw the coral blocks being transported on a borrowed truck, but no one seems to know how Leedskalnin got them on and off the vehicle.

Lots of weird stories have been told and bizarre theories proposed to explain Coral Castle. And since no witness can dispute any of them, they are all worthy of consideration.


The Theories

• One story says that some curious neighbors did see how Leedskalnin moved the stones. They say he placed his hands on the stone to be lifted... and sang. Somehow this levitated the great rocks.
• According to an article in Fate magazine, "some teenagers spying on him one evening claimed they saw him 'float coral blocks through the air like hydrogen balloons,' but no one took them seriously."
• Frank Joseph, in the Fate magazine article, also writes, "Alternative science investigators suggest that Leedskalnin somehow learned the secret of the 'world grid,' an invisible pattern of energy lines surrounding the Earth which concentrates points of telluric power where they intersect. It was here, at one of these intersections of Earth energy, that he was supposedly able to move his prodigious stone blocks using the unseen power of our planet." Yet that still does no explain how Leedskalnin was able to tap this power, and others cannot.
• Coral Castle quotes J. Cathie, a captain flying with National Airways Corp. of New Zealand, as saying: "Measurements from the Coral Castle position to the zero-degree and 90-degree longitude lines, when they passed through the equator, also yielded harmonics related to light and gravity. The final check of the distance between Coral Castle and grid pole A in the north, dispelled any doubt about the site being in an ideal position to allow Leedskalnin to erect the huge blocks of coral with relative ease. Measurements from all major points gave the geometric harmonics necessary for the manipulation of anti-gravity." Cathie also believes that this energy grid is also responsible for many UFO sightings.
• In an article by called "The Coral Castle Mystery" in Atlantis Rising, author Christopher Dunn asserts: "What if there's no such thing as gravity? And the natural forces we already know about are sufficient to explain the noted phenomena we have labeled as gravity? Perhaps Leedskalnin's means of working with the Earth's gravitational pull was nothing more complicated than devising a means by which the alignment of magnetic elements within his coral blocks was adjusted to face the streams of individual magnets he claims are issuing forth from the Earth with a like repelling pole."
• When he was personally asked how he managed the feat, Leedskalnin replied only that he understood the laws of weight and leverage. He is quoted as saying, "I have discovered the secrets of the pyramids. I have found out how the Egyptians and the ancient builders in Peru, Yucatan, and Asia, with only primitive tools, raised and set in place blocks of stone weighing many tons."
• According the The Enigma of Coral Castle, "Ed flatly disagreed with modern science, and claimed that the scientists were wrong, 'that nature is simple.' He believed all matter consisted of individual magnets, and it is the movement of these magnets within materials, and through space, that produce measurable phenomena, magnetism, and electricity. These concepts 'involved the relationship of the Earth to celestial alignments.' He claimed to see beads of light which he believed to be the physical presence of nature's magnetism and life force, or what we term today, chi."

Was Leedskalnin being deceptive when he talked about magnetism and electricity, trying to make his accomplishment more mystical and mysterious than it actually was? Had he merely found a very clever way to manipulate the great stones with levers and pulleys? We may never know the answer. Leedskalnin took his secrets with him to his grave in 1951... secrets that await to be rediscovered.
